PREFACE AND DEDICATION

Bernardus (Bernard, Bernac) Stark Juat seems to have appeared inErie from nowhere. This was established by Ligouri Cousino's150th anniversary book of St. Joseph's Church. He goes on to saythatBernard was in Erie about 1854 when he married Louisa Cousino, daughterof Alexis and Victoria Reau Cousino. We have since found out thatour family originates in Belgium but we do not know exactly wherein BeIgium. Bernard worked in a paper mill, probably in Monroe,Michigan, and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, also in Monroe.

Bernard and Louisa Stark had five children: two daughters, Victoriaand Ellen, and three sons, Dominic, Alexander and Francis.Francis (Frank) married Sarah Barron, the daughter of Noel Barron and Margaret Mominee. To them thirteen children were born.

The name of Stark first appears in Erie in the matrimonial andbaptismal records in St. Joseph Sur La Baie in 1854. It is noted, however, that the original spelling of 'Stark' was 'Sterk'. Thisinformation comes from the book, "Bay Settlement of MonroeCounty, Michigan" by Lambert M. LaVoy.

The first official Stark Reunion was held in 1954 at the MaplewoodPark in Erie, Michigan. Jeanette (Stark) Petee and Gladys(Bernie Stark's wife) decided that since everyone's family was growinglarger and same moving away, a reunion ought to be held to get everyonetogether. So the reunion was planned. At the reunion, Waneta came torealize what a large family she had married into. It was
not easy to remember everyone and who they belonged to, So she beganto write down names and dates A little while after that, shereceived a letter with some family history from Sister Rita Ann. It was then that she decided to write the family history. She worked on iton and off for 25 years. Each year at the annual Stark reunion, shewould ask questions, write, remember. In 1968, it was decided
to hold the reunion every two years. Two families are chosen eachtime to provide games and prizes for the children and refreshmentsfor everyone.

It seemed to be getting harder and harder to keep track of everyone,so Waneta decided to set a date to have the book done. She wanted tohave copies of the book ready for the Stark reunion inJune of 1980.But because of difficulty in tracing people and getting information, the date for the reunion and the completion of the book was moved toSeptember 7, 1980.

We hope that this book will provide a little insight into the pastlives of our descendants. We have tried to do our best in making thenames, dates, and facts as accurate as possible. 2 (From "Decendantsof Frank Stark, 1861-1979" by Waneta R. Stark Copyright 1980)

MONROE DEMOCRAT 31 May, 1883

While at work in a bleaching vat at Walldorf's paper mill lastSaturday forenoon Bernard Stark met with an accident, the result of hisown carelessness. That caused him considerable pain and whichnearlycost him his life.

In filling the bleach a pole is placed in the steam pipe which openssome distance below the top of the tub in order that when the work offilling is completed another pipe leading nearly to the surface may beinserted.

It appears that Stark had packed the straw so closely about the polethat he found considerable difficulty in removing it. He proposedturning on the steam, but was warned by Mr. W.H. Walldorf of theconsequences.

After several more unsuccessful attempts and while Mr. Walldorf hadstepped to another part of the mill, he called to the engineer to turnon the steam, at the same time clasping the pole tightly underhis rightarm and endeavoring to pull it out. The steam forced a stream of thebleaching liquor consisting of water, lime, and soda ash, up along thepole and over his back and right shoulder.

Luckily the force of the stream was sufficient to throw him out of thetub or he would certainly have been cooked alive. As it was he wasbadly burned, and Dr. Wood who was called to attend him was at firstdoubtful about his recovery. He is now gaining rapidly and another weekwill find him at work, but if he ever has occasion to pull that plug youmay rest assured he will know that the steam Is turned off.

Mary Lucy (more commonly known as just Lucy) was born in October of1889. She was the fourth child of Frank and Sarah Stark. Bernard Dusseauwas at one of the house parties in the neighborhood when he and Lucymet. He was the son of John and Ellen (Cutcher) Dusseau, born in Aprilof 1887 in Monroe, Michigan. They were married in Monroe on September28, 1909.

Bernie attended business college, was in the National Guard in theearly 1930's, and served as Treasurer for Sharkey School for many years.Well-known for butchering hogs and beef for the neighbors, he often lefthis own work to go help them. Many times he helped them with theirthreshing and bailing, also. He always bought the best tools and neverhesitated to loan them out. His stomach
seemed to bother him quite a bit. Probably from all the pickle juice hedrank.

Lucy and Bernie had three apple orchards, selling the apples andthe cider that they made. Every year they would have an 'apple butterbee'. Sarah, Lucy's mother, and the Dusseau family would all gather atthe Dusseau home, making the apple butter in big copper kettles.

Lucy played the harmonica and Bernie played the violin, oftenentertaining at house parties. During the winter months they would playfor their children, while everyone enjoyed homemade ice cream orpopcorn.

They were both members of St. Joseph's Church in Monroe, Michigan. She belonged to L.C.B.A. (Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association) andthe Altar Society. Besides all her canning and cooking for so manypeople, she made the children's clothes, sewed quilts, and found time tobe a midwide for many who needed her. She always helped anyone in anykind of sickness or need.

At mealtime, there was always plenty of food. If someone would dropby while they were eating, they were always asked to sit and share themeal. Any other time, Lucy would have a plate of food fixed for them inno time at all. No one ever left their house hungry.

Many reunions were held at the Dusseau residence. They held manythreshing bees, when Sarah would go over to help with the cooking.Bernie and Lucy were always giving of themselves to help someoneout.

Lucy became ill and passed away while at the Beach Nursing Home inMonroe in 1965. Bernie passed away in Mercy Hospital in 1969. They areboth buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Monroe.

VIII.54 Louise STARK, born on 16-09-1883, died 08-1915. LOUISE STARK (From descendants of Frank Stark 1861-1979 By waneta R.Stark

The first child of Sarah and Frank, Louise grew to be a lovelyyoung woman. Donald Price was a young marine engineer from Grand Rapidsworking on the boats out of the ports in Toledo, Ohio. Takinga fancy toeach other, they decided to get married; this small, fragile woman andthis big, strong
sailor with a slightly dark complexion.

Having a seaman for a husband was not an easy life, as Louise wassoon to find out. With Donald out at sea most of the time, she managedtheir apartment on the east side of Toledo. Then the three children wereborn, which was quite a job, she being alone.

Louise and her children went to the Stark home for a short visit inthe beginning of August, 1915. It was in Frank and Sarah's home thatshe died at the early age of 31. The exact cause of Louise's death isnot known. Edna Stark, Joe's wife, was there that Sunday morning, helping out around the house. She went in to give Louise a bath andnoticed a large lump on Louise's side. But no one knew what the lumpwas.

Just before she died, Louise asked her mother, Sarah, if she wouldtake care of her children and Sarah readily said 'yes', she would takecare of them. Father E. Wolfstyn from St. Joseph Church inErie wascalled but Louise passed away before he was able to make it to theirhome. Donald was
not seen after the funeral of Louise.

Daughter of Francis Jerome STARK (see also VII.35) and Sarah BARRON.
Married at the age of 24 on 21-11-1907 to Donald PRICE, born 1872.
From this marriage:
1.  Francis PRICE, born on 20-07-1909, died on 20-07-1909, 0 days old.
2.  Norman Bernard PRICE (see also IX.74).
3.  Vera Louise PRICE, born on 29-10-1913, died on 08-10-1977 at the age of 63. From Descendants of Frank Stark by Waneta R. Stark Page 101

SISTER RITA ANN PRICE, I.H.M.

Vera was born in Toledo, Ohio of Donald and Louise (Stark)Price onOctober 29, 1913. After her mother's death in 1915,she and her brother,Norman, lived with their grandparents, Frank and Sarah Stark of Erie.Vera was always a go-getter, never satisfied to just sit still and letlife pass her by Frances, her mother's youngest sister, was still livingat home when Vera and Norman came to live withthem and they grew upmore as sisters than aunt and niece.

Sarah was in Detroit helping out her daughter-in-law, Belle, andVera just couldn't pass up the opportunity to get into mischief. Withjust her and Frances at home, Vera said, "Frances, let's eat one of thespring chickens, fix mashed potatoes and gravy, and everything, and nottell Ma (Sarah)." Frannie replied, "I won't kill the chicken. If youwant to, go ahead." So Sis (as Frances called Vera)killed the chickenand they both had a grand meal. Afterwards, as they sat looking at theleavings, they decided that they had better get rid of the evidencebefore Sarah found out what they had done. You could always count on Sisto figure something out. She told Frannie, "I'll take the bones out backand bury thee,.. Then M will never know what we did." Sarah never foundout what happened to the missing spring chicken.

Vera entered St. Mary's Convent in Monroe, Michigan on September 8,1929. She took her vows January 2, 1931 after attending St. MaryAcademy. After receiving a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College inDetroit, she began her teaching career at St. Michael's School in 1937.She later transferred to St. John's School in Monroe where she taughtfrom 1942 to 1945. From 1969 to 1971, she taught at St. Joseph's Schoolin Erie, Michigan. Her last assignment was at Holy Redeemer School inDetroit where she taught from 1973 until September of 1977 when shebecame ill. She passed away in
St. Mary's Infirmary in Monroe where she had been for only two days.Mass was conducted in the Motherhouse Chapel with the Rev. RobertHirsch, CSsR as the principal celebrant. She was buried in St. Mary'sCemetery.

Sister Rita Ann (later known as Sister Rita Ann Price) belonged tothe order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Everyone in the family canrecall seeing her at most of the family get-togethers. She cared verymuch for her family, always trying to be in on everything that was goingon.

After the sisters became more liberal with their dress code, SisterRita Ann was always seen wearing one particular thing: something red. Itdidn't matter if it was a small pin on her collar, a modest pair ofearrings, or a pair of smartlooking red shoes. She was very partial tothe color red.

Being a servant of God was the most important thing in the life ofSister Rita Ann. A strong belief in God has always been present in ourfamily. We are sure that deep religious convictions have helped and willcontinue to help many people come through some of the more trying timesin life.
